I can attest.

I had 4 years of industry experience at a startup primarily writing Java and C before attending. I went to HackerSchool because I wanted some time to learn from, discover with, and teach like-minded folks interested in programming. I studied Computer Science and Applied Mathematics in college, but that is by no means the norm.

It's a retreat more than anything--it's about growth and exploration rather than School or Hacking. They've since changed their name to The Recurse Center to better reflect their aims.

I would recommend it to anyone with the interest and ability to open-endedly explore their interest in programming. There are benefits for career-minded programmers, but the goal is really just to grow.

Hacker School alum chiming in to say:

1. Hacker School is awesome! By far the most educational and fun 3 months of my life!

2. Hacker School is NOT A BOOTCAMP! It's sites like this that make people think it is. Come here is you truly love programming and want to spend 3 months with awesome, interesting, friendly, smart people. Come here if you want to grow as a programmer and as a person. But DON'T come here if you just want to learn how to make single page webapps to get a job and you don't even enjoy programming!

I've looked into a few programs and this one has interested me the most. They have provided a pretty clear description of what they are looking for in applicants in post below.
